Pottery made during Arts and Sabbath Retreat

For anyone seeking Sabbath time and exposure to an art form – no experience necessary

Choose one of these art forms to study for the entire week, receiving intensive artistic experience under the expert guidance of a skilled artist. Balance learning with Sabbath time, in group worship and individually, for reflection, practice, and the simple enjoyment of applying what you have learned.

Part of a continuing series of workshops led by noted regional artists, the spring Arts & Sabbath Week at Montreat Conference Center is open to anyone interested in one of the areas being offered, regardless of experience.

Fall Retreat: October 3-8, 2010

Pottery • Visual Journals

Pottery made during Arts and Sabbath Retreat

Pottery: In the Potter’s Hands Each day we are in the potter’s hands being molded, stretched, and formed. In this workshop, through working with clay and exploring the relationship of the elements of earth, water, and fire, we will find a place to pause in Sabbath. Limited to 10 participants. Materials Fee: $30. Martha Nelson, Ridgecrest, NC; professional potter and pottery instructor who spends her summers teaching at the Sally Jones Pottery in Montreat.

Visual Journals: Sacred Spaces for Playing with the Creator Never thought of yourself as an artist? Have you been a miserable failure in your attempts at keeping a daily journal? Problems focusing on prayer and Scripture? Come spend a week using a whole new approach to journaling and meditation – color, design, play, music, spontaneity, messiness, and creativity. We will hand make our own beautiful journals and use a variety of Scriptures and creative experiments to fill them with color, words, pictures, textures, and designs. Whether beginning or experienced artists, we all have creativity inside of us calling to get out and visual journaling is designed to help that happen… Materials Fee: $30. Deb Guess; Summerville, SC; artist, wife, mom, campus minister, gardener, chocoholic, and cook. She lives in Summerville, SC, with her husband Deck. Deb is a firm believer that creativity is a way to get in touch with the Sacred and looks for every opportunity to connect life and creativity. She enjoys teaching AND learning and is a dabbler of the first order. While she enjoys artistic endeavors of many kinds, her favorites are book arts and jewelry.
